polyphasic sleep

October 4th, 2007 — 7:21am

After reading this Time article yesterday, I’ve been pondering a month exercise in polyphasic sleep. (Where, essentially, you just take a 30 min nap every 6 hours or so.) I could work it around my job, taking my short nap on my lunch break.

Anyway, the reason for this post is I stumbled across this blog, Every Four Hours, which is the story of a couple switching over to a polyphasic sleep cycle. They just started TODAY, which is odd and cool. It’s an omen!

It would be very neat if I could reclaim 5 hours a day that I normally sleep through. Of course, this regimen would make me a creature of the night, in some sense, but I’m ok with that.

UPDATE: Actually, it takes at least 10 days to get slightly used to the routine, so I think it’d have to be longer than a month trial..

UPDATE II: Here is a GREAT site, logging a mans trials with polyphasic sleep. After reading this I’m really excited to try it.

A good day

October 2nd, 2007 — 8:05pm

This last weekend I spent in Berkeley with my friends, to see what we did, check out Susan’s post here. She sums up my visit really well. It was a great time.

Today I was off work. I planned on sleeping in a little bit, but ended up not stirring until 10:50. Wow, i never do that. I mean, I did when I was in Berkeley, but that’s mainly due to the fact we stayed up very late.

I woke up, showered, had some toast and a glass of chocolate milk (I act like a 6 year old at times. This includes foodstuffs) I had several good thoughts while I was taking my shower, and acted on them immediately. Once I was dry.

I powered up nightcube, my AWESOME low power comp I made, and hopped online. I logged into myspace, and deleted my account. I’ve had an account since 2003. Why do that, you may ask. Well it’s because myspace tied me to a lot of things I want to grow out of, such as heavy partying, etc. I realize that although I don’t use it so much anymore, it’s keeping me tied in that world, by checking on people I know, etc. I would check that at least 3 times a day. it was just a bad thing for me. Now that it’s gone, I really feel like I’ve entered a new phase or something. I feel lighter.

The next thing I did was to reduce my netflicks from a two-at-a-time plan to one. I did this because I want to watch more anime! My TV time is finite, and anime is a better use of it than movies, I think.

On a little side note, Netflicks is a really classy business. I looked at my billing, and saw I paid through the 18th of October for the two at a time. I figured lowering my plan would cause me to get one at a time, but the reduced billing would start next month. I’d lose about 16 days of the extra DVD. I was prepared for that, but after I lowered my plan, I saw a message which said that my plan would be adjusted AFTER my current billing cycle was over. That was very gentlemanly of them.

After this, I had a quick cheese and pickle sandwich (yum) and headed to the library. I found some pretty good titles; I checked out six books in all. I got home around two, and read pretty much nonstop until 7pm. I read Stephen White’s “Harm’s Way”, which is a pretty good murder mystery. Whenever I read for an extended period of time I get motivated to write, hence this blog post. (I think too, this is why in Stephen King’s “On Writing” he says a good writer should read half the day, then write.)

I just finished my dinner of steamed broccoli and a burrito, so I’ve got my B’s covered for today, ha ha.
