  • I could really go for scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and a bagel with cream cheese right now. #
  • Going to utilize some SimpleXML functions in PHP soon. One of my main reasons for upgrading to 5.2.5. #
  • Trying to determine my course of action for this evening. So far we have a stop by at my buddies new job (a bar), a t-mobile store visit.. #

My Twittering for 2008-02-28

February 28th, 2008 — 11:59pm
  • Heading to meet up with friends for sushi. Im getting veggie rolls of course #
  • At work, getting ready to head into a meeting. It will probably last at least an hour. Gotta get out of there so I can upgrade PHP! #
  • @darbedagrons The meaty tube talk scares me. We are more than a protein source! Aren’t we? #
  • Heading out to El Puerto for lunch with Dan. Lunchbreaks are often the best part of the day. But, I also <3 food more than most.. #
  • Copying over the files for PHP 5 to the server. Serious butterflies right now.. #
  • Well PHP works, the MSSQL and GD extensions don’t, but I’m hoping a reboot of the server will help. Reboots always help. #
  • PHP and extensions are working fine, after some dll replacement that is really stupid; rolling two .dll files back to version 5.2.1. #

Berkeley Trip in February 2008

February 27th, 2008 — 2:15pm

Hopefully no one will hate the Twitter tie in thing. I just wanted a record of all my twitters, and it’s neat to look back and see what I was doing that day.

So, after a fun long weekend in Berkeley with my friends maiki, Susan, Kimi, Justin, Jason and others, I’m back at work. It’s just 3 days, so it won’t be too bad.

Anyway, back to the visit. I had a really great time! We helped Katie and her roomie move into their new apartment. We used the A-team soundtrack for motivational purposes. It made the job a lot of fun. We also implemented a ‘bucket brigade’ method of moving boxes and most light furniture. A person was places every couple of paces, and we just ferried the payload from person to person, even up steps. It worked great, and it made it fast too.

Friday I tagged along with maiki and we went to a coffee place called Village Grounds. (Which, interestingly, has a flash website that delightfully hits all our talking points on why flash is bad for web design) He worked on some web stuff, while I did some fiction writing. I wrote by hand, which I haven’t done in a while. I remember why I used to do it though, ideas flowed very well. I think I’ll stick to that from now on. After about 3 pages worth, we made our way back, snagged a burrito from Monte Cristo, which was excellent.

I don’t know, lots more happened but the days all kind of blur together. And I’m lazy.

Being a pillar in the community, one Box of cookies at a time.

February 18th, 2008 — 10:09pm

It is well known that I am a strong supporter of the local community. So, a month ago, when a small girl knocked on my front door and asked if I wanted to order some Girl Scout cookies, the only response available to me was ‘yes!’. I ordered two boxes of Thin Mints, which I argue are the best of the selection by far, and felt glad in the knowledge that I had helped this young entrepreneur on along her way.

I had forgotten this incident actually, but it all came back to me this evening when I heard a small knock on my door. A quick glance through the glass confirmed the identity of the caller as the girl scout in question. I opened the door, and after exchanging pleasantries, I ran to collect my wallet as she prepared my order.

I came back and handed her a $20. As she dutifully worked to present me with my change, I felt obligated to fill in this small lull with conversation.

Me: “So, I bet you’re glad to have today off, huh?”

Her: “Oh yeah, I love it. How did you know? Did they have that when you were little?”

Me: “… Um, yeah. Hey I still got it off! It was a company holiday at work.”

Her: “That’s cool!”

Me: “Yeah, getting time off is great, isn’t it?”

Her, handing me my change: “You bet it is. Well, thanks a lot!”

Me: “You’re welcome. Don’t work to hard now.”

Her: “Don’t worry, I won’t. Bye!”

What I thought was humourous in this was A) We didn’t have presidents when I was little? WTF? and B) Her attitude was total jaded, blue collar worker reveling in some time off. It gives me hope for future generations.

Some Points on the Nature of Light and Vision

February 15th, 2008 — 3:27pm

I’ve known all about light ever since my first science text book. Everyone knows about light; what we see is the visible spectrum, colored things absorb certain wavelengths, bounces back other, etc. Pretty normal stuff that I thought was interesting, but minutely so.

That all changed last night.

I had taken a break from my Ergo Proxy watching; decided to read a little more of The Mother Tongue. I went out to the living room, flipped on the lights and plopped down on the couch. Once I got all situated, I kinda just sat there for a bit. Yes I’m a pretty exciting guy sometimes, sprawled out on the couch staring at a light.

It got me thinking about light in general. The more I thought about it, the more crazy the notion got. Before I knew it, an hour had gone by and I was feeling overwhelmed by it all. Here are some of the points I came across.

— Vision is just the ability to see echos of light. It is no more different than how bats see things by echos. Or radar. That is so stupid to me.

— Look at a lit room. Imagine these rays coming from the light source constantly, hitting all the walls and items continuously; it’s the reflection from that impact that we think of as ‘lit’ or ‘visible’.

— What if we ever ran across aliens who use light for communication? They would see our lights hung up everywhere like we’d see poles everywhere with speakers hooked up going ‘AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH’. They’d be like ‘WTF’. A computer monitor to them would be REALLY crazy.

— If the only way you could ‘see’ was by the ricochet of bullets, then a machine gun would be your flashlight.

— There is no difference between a light and dark room. Or daytime and night. Sometimes there are rays going through the area you can see the reflections of, sometimes there isn’t.

— Why is light necessary to ‘see’ your surroundings? It seems like double work, since there is already something flying around colliding off every surface in a room: lighter than air particles. I want to be able to see by the echos of air particles. Or maybe you can’t, since it happens so amazingly fast it paints all the surfaces of a room all at once, making it unintelligible ‘white noise’.

— Just as radiation waves hurt us, what if there are beings who are harmed or sickened by waves in the visible spectrum? Maybe a ‘fear of the dark’ is instilled in us from a long past battle with these spectrum-fearing monsters? Does this explain childrens fear of the dark?

Just the fact that what we take for granted as ‘vision’ is just the ability to see echos of light.. that seems crazy to me. I’ve known of the mechanics of light for a while now, but after last night I feel like I have a better awareness of the mechanics in action.

Still, it’s extensive thinking on points like these that, to me, sometimes puts into question my sanity. That and I talk to myself when I’m alone. I never ask questions though, more declarative statements, so I think that makes it ok… ?

Phrase I found contemplative.

February 14th, 2008 — 5:01pm

Unless I grip the sword,
I cannot protect you.

While gripping the sword,
I cannot embrace you.

It gives off such a sad and yet committed vibe to me. I certainly can empathize with the undercurrents there.

I was reading some BLEACH manga last night, when I came across it. Hey, who says manga doesn’t teach you things??

Weekend of Feb 8th; action packed!

February 11th, 2008 — 2:30pm

This weekend was pretty fun and productive. A rare and wonderful combo!

-Friday-
My buddy Donald called out of the blue. He was in town, and wanted to hang out for a bit. He stopped by the house, and we talked for almost two hours. Around 8:30, we decided to head out and enjoy all that the folsom nightlife has to offer. That was sarcasm.

We went to Pizzeria Classico, a restaurant 3 blocks from my house on Sutter Street. (Sutter Street is the main drag in Old Folsom, which is primarily restaurants and pubs.) Mills, Dutt, Jeff and some others were working, so we were accosted with free food and beverages; not a bad thing. Mills had a concert to play at the following day in Oakland, and the poor guy had a horrible cold. As lead singer of BREVA, having a cold was kind of a problem. I hear their show went ok though, so thats good.

After socializing with the pizza crew, we went to FLB (Folsom Lake Bowl, for those not in ‘the know’) and said hi to Greg. He was working his one night a week there, dealing blackjack. It was pretty busy there, but in a good way. Ran into my friend Taryn, who I found out just got divorced. She was doing ok though; boy was she upset about the Primary Elections here in CA. She is a diehard republican who voted for Romney. She thought he was the Republicans last hope or something. I said I had thought Ron Paul was a much more authentic Republican. Discussion ensued.

After that it was like 1am, so Don dropped me off at my house, then I went to bed.

-Saturday-
Woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed, and really in the mood to be productive. This doesn’t happen often.

I worked in my room for over 4 hours, going through alll my boxes of books, deciding what I will keep, and what I will pass on. Final tally is looking like 3 boxes will stay with me, 6 will go to new homes.

Around 4 I went up to my parents house to go through some of the boxes I have up there, after which I had dinner. Meg was there too. Had a lot of good chats.

Then I started getting calls from Greg, who wanted to hang out. I was planning on staying in, but it didn’t work out that way.

Went home, changed into clothes appropriate to wear when you might need to make good 1st impressions on peoples. Greg came by, picked me up and we went to Pollio’s house. (Like 7 blocks away) Pollio was there with his wife, Rhino was there too with his GF, Kelvin and someone I didn’t know.

Pollio’s house has a one car garage, and it’s his little retreat. He has three motorcycles he’s working on, all of them are over 30 years old. It is one of the coolest little work areas I’ve ever seen; has tons of personality. Next time I go over I’m bringing my camera.

Ryan called and wanted everyone to come over because it was his birthday, so all 8 of us walked over to his house, where there was a lot more people. His place is right over Old Folsom; the kitchen windows have a pretty awesome view. Again.. no camera.

Ryans girlfriend Jenny was running around playing hostess. Seriously, the girl is super nice. She reminds me of a young June Cleaver, without the smoky voice. Once enough people showed up, she snuck away and came out with a cake she made, complete with candles. The cake was top notch.

Sadly, there was a moron in the group who was beginning to ruin everyones good time. Once Greg’s girlfriend Teresa showed up (she just got off her babysitting gig.) we all walked down two blocks to Sutter Street. Went up to Hacienda, a Mexican place. I knew my friend Correa was working, and it was just his bday that week, so we went up to say hi. Ended up out on the patio, with the group getting bigger by the minute as friends kept coming in.

After a while the place was closing down (2am) so everyone went their separate ways. I enjoyed my 3 block walk home, though it was a mite cold.

-Sunday-
Woke up feeling ok and starving. Went into the kitchen to make some breakfast ramen, but last second decided to call Greg. He was coming into folsom around noon, so we planned to do lunch at Red Robin. While waiting for him to show up, I watched Ep 2 of Lost, season 4. (This season totally has me hooked again)

Greg and Teresa show up, and we head to Red Robin. Do the classic motzeralla sticks and french fries for an appetizer, then I got a Turkey burger. It hit the spot.

After our lunch, to walk off the lethargicness we walked over to Kohls and perused the store for a bit. I found these AWESOME santa boxer shorts on sale for $6. They looked like santa’s pants, complete with the white fur stuff on the bottom. The best part though was it came with a hat. I nearly got it, but wisely changed my mind.

Took Teresa to her car, then Greg dropped me off at home. I took a 2 hour nap, then read The Alienist for 5 hours. It’s a pretty good book, about a mass murderer in New York City in 1898. Took a break to go to Winco at 7pm, where I stocked up on frozen burritos, mixed veggies and chocolate soy milk.

Came home, read more until 11pm (only have about a third of the book left for tonight!) then went to bed.

All in all, a very busy weekend. Sunday night was pretty fun, but that group of people do that every weekend, which would drive me crazy. I’m good now for a month or so. :)

Hope everyone elses weekend was good too.

Update to my LibraryThing widget

February 7th, 2008 — 2:53pm

I don’t know if anyone notices these things, but I changed up my LibraryThing list on the right. I now tag items I read with a Month + Year that I read them in. So this month would be: ‘February2008′. I set up my LibraryWidget to pull that tag, but then I used PHP to insert the month and year. Like so:

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://www.librarything.com/jswidget.php?reporton=timotheus&show=random&header=1&num=20&covers=small&text=all&tag=<?php echo date("FY");?>&css=0&style=1&version=1">
</script>

What this means is, as I read books during the month and tag them, the list will increase. You will be able to see what I’ve read, if you’re curious. And you know you are.
